Chart 10 above shows the consumer sentiment against the S&P 500 index and the investor sentiment according to the AAII survey. Although a comparison is somewhat clouded by the different frequency of the data, the chart suggests that there is a somewhat tenuous connection between the two. Later, I was a bit surprised to note that one of my favorite measures of investor sentiment was indicating more indecision than ever. An investor that is bullish, will primarily think that the market will head higher in the next six months. One of the highs of the bullish survey was in 2000 during the technology boom. This sentiment indicator reached 75% during that time frame. US Investor Sentiment, % Bullish is at 29.74%, compared to 38.74% last week and 37.39% last year. There appears to be some similarity between the social media sentiment and the retail survey. 3 days ago AAII Investor Survey Says Deeper Bearish Phase For Stocks This week's “One Chart” is the S&P 500 Index using the AAII rankings, which is a a secular bull market, I think this instead is a dramatic shift in sentiment overall.
